The Power of Crawling

Lisa Cooseman, OTR/L, MS

When we think of crawling, we often see it as just another step before walking. But did you know that crawling plays a crucial role in a child’s overall development? It’s not just about getting from point A to point B—it helps build essential skills that support learning, coordination, and even reading later on!

Strengthens Coordination & Motor Skills

Crawling helps develop muscles in a child’s arms, legs, and core, which are essential for later motor skills like running, jumping, and even holding a pencil. The coordinated movement of opposite hands and feet also lays the groundwork for balance and body control.

Boosts Brain Development

When babies crawl, they use both sides of their brain together, strengthening neural connections. This cross-lateral movement supports communication between the left and right hemispheres, which is important for tasks like problem-solving and processing information.

Supports Visual Tracking for Reading

Crawling requires babies to shift their focus between their hands and the floor, helping develop visual tracking skills. This skill is later needed for reading, as children must smoothly move their eyes across a page.

Encourages Sensory Exploration

As babies crawl, they experience different textures, temperatures, and surfaces, helping them develop sensory processing skills. This hands-on exploration builds confidence and supports spatial awareness.

Prepares for Writing & Fine Motor Skills

The weight-bearing aspect of crawling strengthens the hands, wrists, and shoulders, which are key for fine motor development. Children who skip crawling may struggle with handwriting, grasping small objects, or using utensils effectively.

Encouraging Crawling at Home

If your little one is reluctant to crawl, try creating a fun, engaging space. Place toys just out of reach, use soft mats for comfort, use a baby proof mirror to encourage them to crawl toward their reflection and give them plenty of tummy time to build strength. Every child develops at their own pace, but supporting crawling can have lasting benefits!

Crawling isn’t just a phase—it’s an essential foundation for future learning and movement. So, let’s celebrate those little hands and knees in motion!
